Cynic - Traced in Air (2008)

The long-awaited follow-up to Cynic's revolutionary metal album Focus is finally here. To say the album was a long time coming would be an understatement; Focus was originally released all the way back in 1993, and the band split up shortly afterwards while working on their second studio album. In late 2006, the band suddenly reunited and played a number of shows across Europe, later announcing that they were working on a new studio album.

Here we are two years later, the album has leaked ahead of its October 27th release date, and everybody cannot get over how good this album is. Rather than changing and evolving the sound of their previous album, it seems as if the band opted to further tighten and perfect the sound that they had crafted so well on Focus, and the results are nothing short of outstanding. Everything (and I mean everything) has been improved on this album; the musicianship, the songwriting, the flow, the vocals, the drums, the bass, etc. It all comes together to create one of the best metal albums I've ever heard. Even if you aren't into metal, I urge you to at least give this a chance - it's about as uncliché as metal gets.
